Are You Using the Right Toothpaste? Gainesville, GA
Man Brushing His Teeth Gainesville GA

If you’ve ever been to the toothpaste aisle at the grocery store, you know how overwhelming it can be. Not only are there are countless brands and flavors, but each tube is marketed with various specialties, from tartar control and sensitivity to whitening and other specific attributes. How can you determine which toothpaste is the best for your smile?

The most effective and easiest way to choose the right toothpaste is to ask your dentist. At Gainesville Dental Group, we know your teeth well, and we have a keen understanding of what your smile needs out of a toothpaste – which may or may not be what your neighbor or spouse needs!

In the meantime, here is a general overview to help you navigate the toothpaste aisle:

ADA SEAL

You’ll see this on many toothpaste brands, and it’s a non-negotiable trademark. The ADA seal means that The American Dental Association (ADA) has tested the product and approves that it can be trusted to live up to its claims. The ADA seal means you are getting quality and safety, and that’s important!

FLUORIDE

Another “non-optional” feature of your toothpaste selection should be fluoride. Fluoride is an important ingredient because it strengthens the enamel of your teeth and helps prevent cavities. You won’t have a hard time finding a toothpaste that contains fluoride, as most of brands on the market abide by this preventative inclusion. It is now safe for patients of all ages to use a fluoride toothpaste.

WHITENING

While you shouldn’t expect a whitening toothpaste to do miracles or even perform the job of a professional whitening treatment, there are some toothpaste products that help remove surface-level stains. Many of these whitening toothpastes contain more abrasives and include carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide as an effective teeth whitening agent. If you struggle to maintain a bright smile, a whitening toothpaste may be something to consider.

SENSITIVE TEETH

Do hot or cold foods and drinks make you wince in pain? Teeth sensitivity is a common dental concern. While you should always discuss your sensitivity with your dentist first (as it could be a sign of decay or fracture), there are some toothpastes that claim to strengthen your enamel and give you relief from the daily sensitivity.

TARTAR CONTROL

What exactly is tartar? Tartar is the substance that forms when plaque hardens over time. Unfortunately, once tartar develops, only a professional dental cleaning can remove it. This is also the recipe for cavities and gum disease. A tartar control toothpaste will be tougher on plaque formation and work to prevent it from hardening into tartar.

When it comes to today’s toothpaste options, there are many powerful ingredients and formulas available. However, it is important to remember that no toothpaste can do its job if you don’t use it. Brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time is the recommended rules for optimal oral health. If you want to make sure you are using the most appropriate toothpaste formula for your specific dental needs, please schedule an appointment with Gainesville Dental Group today!

Very happy with the staff at Gainesville Dental Group. The doctors are caring and experienced. I never am left in the waiting room. The hygienist always ask thorough questions and report to the doctor before the exam, saving me from having to repeat everything. Highly recommend.

I came to Gainesville Dental Group with a crown that was in bad shape and painful. Dr. Vetter was very knowledgeable about what needed to be done and went to great lengths to ensure the treatment to resolve the problem was in my best interest. He and assistant Sarah Riley were very professional yet personable. They worked together seamlessly in a manner that put me at ease and were very focused on fixing the tooth. Any physical discomfort was minimal and both Dr. Vetter and Sarah were encouraging and positive. A very good experience.

I come to Gainesville Dental Group for my routine cleanings and absolutely love it! It’s very clean and I love how up to date they are with digital X-rays and photos of the teeth. I had to have a filling and they were able to point out on the screen where my cavity was on the X-ray. It’s much easier getting the work done when you have an understanding of what the doctor is doing! Dr. Vetter did my filling and the whole procedure was pain free! I can’t say enough good things about this group!

Dr. Gannon and Hannah were great. They talked me thru my procedure and made sure I was comfortable and pain free. The office was friendly and pleasant. My hubby and son have used them and liked them. I've found a new dentist! Thank You GDG.

Great dental visit! Went in for annual cleaning and x-rays. Donna did an awesome job and pointed out a potential issue which she brought up to the doctor who concurred. It was an excellent visit. Thank you to the "team" @ Gainesville Dental Group.
